9 To 5
Girls Night Out
Colin Higgins / USA / 1981 / 109 mins
Wednesday 14 / 18.30 / The Gate Midleton and The Gate Mallow
Delightful 80s revenge comedy about three female employees of the biggest ‘sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot’ boss on the planet who decide to get revenge by abducting him and running the business themselves. Long-suffering office manager Violet (Lily Tomlin), co-workers newly divorced housewife Judy (Jane Fonda) and secretary Doralee (Dolly Parton) fantasise about ‘doing him in’ when opportunity knocks and a freak accident enables them to run the show on their terms, introducing day care, flexible working and equal pay. But how long can they keep it up? Parton’s title song was Oscar® nominated and won two Grammys; her natural exuberance shines throughout.
Vertigo
Saturday Matinee Classic
Alfred Hitchcock / USA / 1958 / 128 mins
Saturday 17 / 16.00 / The Gate Midleton and The Gate Mallow
The 60th anniversary of its creation and the wickedly playful homage The Green Fog provide some context for this presentation of Vertigo, though, frankly, why would anyone need an excuse to get one of Hollywood’s towering masterpieces back on a cinema screen, which its dizzying delights were designed for? Hitchcock’s genius is evident in every frame of a much-analysed tale of obsession and voyeurism: James Stewart and Kim Novak hit career highs with mesmerising performances; it’s impeccably stylised, with alluring costumes and colours, and the jolts of its dark psychological shocks continue to resonate.
