Illuminate Film & Mental Health Programme: ‘Ernie & Joe’
Cork Film Festival’s Illuminate film and mental health programme presents a series of film and public discussion events which explore different aspects of mental health and wellbeing, in partnership with Arts+Minds and Cork Mental Health Service HSE, First Fortnight and ESB Energy for Generations Fund. The programme, which was initiated in 2014 and is unique in Ireland, presents a series of films which explore mental health and wellbeing, and discussions with filmmakers and mental health professionals, inspired by the films.
Jennifer McShane’s inspiring new documentary ‘Ernie & Joe’, the first of our Illuminate 2019 programme, is a thought provoking documentary about mental health and approaches to policing. Choosing empathy and plain clothes instead of guns and uniforms, the two Texas police officers provide a remarkable insight into how the San Antonio Police Department’s Mental Health Unit is changing the way police respond to mental health calls.
The screening on Monday 11th of November will be followed by a panel discussion led by Claire Rassian of First Fortnight, as well as Garda Helen McGrath and Garda Sandra Materson from Templemore Garda College and Denis Long, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, who will discuss the film’s themes in relation to an Irish context and our own policies around mental health and policing.

Straight from it’s world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival, don’t miss Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney’s acclaimed ‘Citizen K’, a fascinating documentary about Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once believed to the the richest man in Russia. In Annie Silverstein’s ‘Bull’, which screened at Cannes, two desperate mismatched souls find each other in the rodeo bull-ring in rural Texas. Kris is a troubled 14 year old girl, separated from her mother who is in prison and her neighbour Abe is in denial about his rodeo days nearing an end. ‘Bull’ is one of the finest American debut features this year – catch it in the Gate Cinemas this Monday, 11th and Wednesday 13th of November.
Documentarians Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova’s ‘Cat in the Wall’, direct from Locarno Film Festival, is an unnerving window into a Britain fuelled by mistrust, misinformation and Brexit propaganda. Single mother Irina, a Bulgarian living in a council estate in London, becomes embroiled in a dispute over the ownership of a cat and witnesses a side to British society she hadn’t known before. See it this Monday the 11th or catch it again on Tuesday, 12th of November.

The IFI Irish Independence Newsreel Collection: Cork in the Newsreels
Join us in the Festival Club, The Cellar Theatre, at the Mardyke Entertainment Complex on Sheare’s Street on Monday 11th for a free fascinating talk on Cork in The Newsreels. The era of the cinema newsreel in the 1900-1930 period coincided with an era of turmoil in Irish social and political life. Cork City and County appeared frequently in newsreels which documented events during the War of Independence and Civil War and later in the early years of the state./span>
With a focus on stories relating to Cork City and environs, Dr Ciara Chambers (UCC) will consider the history of early newsreel production and distribution while Kasandra O’Connell (IFI Irish Film Archive) will discuss the acquisition, digitisation and preservation of the Irish Independence Newsreel Collection, now safeguarded within the IFI Irish Film Archive.
