Closing Night Gala: ‘The Other Lamb’
Malgorzata Szumowska’s (‘Body’, CFF 2015; ‘Mug’, CFF 2018) unsettling English-language debut ‘The Other Lamb’ is a haunting and a timely rage against patriarchy, written by fantasy author Catherine S McMullen.
Hidden away from civilisation, an all-female religious cult serves its spiritual leader, a man known as Shepherd (Michiel Huisman). Selah (Raffey Cassidy) has grown into a teenager as part of this self-sufficient community, but as she approaches adulthood, pervasive doubts about her faith inspire dark, bloody visions. As the Shepherd leads his ‘flock’ on a journey to find a new paradisal retreat, Selah is shocked to learn what her role in the group is to become. Visually striking and with compelling performances by Huisman, Cassidy and Denise Gough, the film’s poetical aesthetics cast an intoxicating spell.

Widely hailed as a masterpiece of modern cinema, Chantal Akerman’s ‘Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles’ follows three days in the life of widowed housewife Jeanne.
In a career-defining performance from Delphine Seyrig, Jeanne carries out her daily routine with familiarity and precision: she cleans the apartment, prepares meals for her son and has intercourse with male callers for money. Akerman takes neorealism to its extreme so that when tiny cracks begin to appear in Jeanne’s life, their disruption is altogether devastating.
