67th CORK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SHORTS AWARDS ANNOUNCED
Following a screening of the UCC Puttnam Scholars’ short film, Hyphen at the Triskel earlier today, we were delighted to welcome CIFF Patron Lord David Puttnam who announced the short films who won awards at the 67th Cork International Film Festival.
The awards for Grand Prix Irish Short, Grand Prix International Short and Grand Prix Documentary Short Award are Academy Award®-qualifying, ensuring that the winners in Cork automatically join the Oscars®’ long-list. Congratulations to all.
The winner of the Best Cork Short Award will be announced after the screening of the Irish Shorts 3: Pure Cork programme on Saturday, 19 November (1.30pm) at The Everyman.
    
  
SELLING FAST – DOCUMENTARY GALA: ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED
Academy Award®-winning documentarian Laura Poitras’ portrait of American photographer Nan Goldin won the Golden Lion Award at Venice Film Festival this year.
Goldin’s life story, her famous friends, and iconic photographic work are all featured in this multi-layered documentary, as well as her fight against the Sacklers family and Purdue Pharma, maker of OxyContin.
There will be a post-screening discussion with film artist Vivienne Dick and CIFF Director of Programming Anna Kopecká.

INDUSTRY: DOC DAY LIVE
CIFF continues to develop its focus on high-quality Irish and international documentary cinema with Doc Day, connecting emerging and established non-fiction filmmakers with industry professionals and the wider sector.
Tomorrow, Friday 18th Nov at 10am in The Metropole Hotel, Doc Day comprises a session dissecting current trends and shifts in the non-fiction film industry, as well as a focus on impact distribution with Together Films, one of the most prominent impact strategists and distributors working in the documentary industry. The event will also include an ‘in-conversation’ session about personal filmmaking with The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales director Abigail Disney.
A drinks reception will conclude the event 4pm – 5pm, followed by the screening of Abigail Disney’s new feature documentary The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales at 5.30pm at the Gate Cinema Cork.

The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales
Boldly confronting the inherent injustices rooted in US society through the first person perspective of filmmaker Abigail Disney, this personal narrative studies the Disney legacy and bravely holds to account systemic injustices in America’s unbalanced and fraught economy.
In a subtle yet radical critique of the American Dream myth, the film is passionate and impactful.
There will be a Q&A after the film with co-directors Abigail Disney and Kathleen Hughes and producer Aideen Kane, as well as surprise guests in attendance.

Sentenced to death by Electric Chair, William Colcott curses the prison he resides in along with all that dwell within the gates.
Two post-mortem photographers, turned paranormal investigators, become embroiled in an investigation with a mysterious medium, Lucian Abberton. They must work together to stop William’s spirit from escaping Bishops Gate Jail and unleashing the gates of hell on Victorian London.
Director Stephen Hall and the film’s cast will be in attendance and will participate in a post-screening Q&A.

A heartwarming and entertaining snapshot of women in their golden years, featuring a Floridian dance troupe for women over 60, this inspirational film combines observation with dreamlike performance sequences.
This is a film that truly embodies the sentiment that age ain’t nothing but a number.

With the government poised to enact Section 28, a law that prohibits the promotion of homosexuality, P.E. teacher Jean hides her own sexuality from her colleagues to avoid retribution. A new student, however, causes Jean’s life to spiral into chaos.
Georgia Oakley’s debut feature accurately depicts 1980s homophobia and glimpses into the future at the same time.
