Tomorrow is the last day of the 67th Cork International Film Festival and there’s still time to catch Gala screenings, family films and an homage to a legendary filmmaker.
Read on to discover programme highlights for Sunday, 20th November, including our not-to-be-missed Family Gala: Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, a great selection of Cork-themed shorts in IFI Local Films for Local People, and our Closing Gala: Sam Mendes’ beautiful celebration of cinema in Empire of Light. FAMILY GALA:
ROALD DAHL’S MATILDA THE MUSICAL
Adapted from the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical, Matilda Wormwood (Alisha Weir) is a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination – and the worst parents in the world. Although her parents (Andrea Riseborough and Stephen Graham) enjoy trashy TV and dodgy money-making schemes, she enjoys losing herself in books and thinking up cheeky rebellions.
Upon meeting Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch), Matilda begins to create fantastical tales of her own. Taking a stand against her parents and head teacher Miss Trunchbull (Emma Thompson), Matilda changes the course of her life in a remarkable way.
Actor Alisha Weir, who plays Matilda, will be in attendance to introduce the screening.

Empire of Light, set in a seaside town in the early 1980s, is a powerful and poignant story about human connection and the magic of cinema, directed by Academy AwardÂź-winner Sam Mendes. With outstanding, unforgettable performances from Academy AwardÂź-winning actors Olivia Colman and Colin Firth, Golden Globes AwardÂź-nominated Toby Jones, and BAFTAÂź award-winning Micheal Ward, there is no better way to round off this yearâs Festival than with this beautiful celebration of cinema.

Our Features Awards winners for 2022 – Gradam Spiorad ne FĂ©ile (Spirit of the Festival Award, sponsored by Gate Cinema); Gradam ne FĂ©ile do ScannĂĄin FaisnĂ©ise (Award for Cinematic Documentary); and CIFF Youth Jury Award – will be announced as part of the Closing Gala.

Souleymane CissĂ©’s Yeelen (brightness or light in Bambara language) is a Malian classic of 1987 that has arguably been one of his most influential films. Imaginatively based upon African myths, it follows a young man who is trying to find allies to fight a powerful wizard…his own father.
In 1987, Cissé opened Cork International Film Festival with Yeelen, and this year, our International Feature Documentary programme will feature a documentary about him.

Werner Herzog: Radical Dreamer
Werner Herzog’s extraordinary film career is chronicled by director, writer and journalist Thomas von Steinaecker, including Fitzcarraldo and unforgettable documentaries like Grizzly Man and Into the Inferno.
Among the classic stories told in the film is the love-hate relationship he had with actor Klaus Kinski and his pilgrimage to Paris. Furthermore, the film features interviews with directors, actors, friends, and family, as well as people who worked alongside and were inspired by Herzog. An appropriate homage to this important filmmaker on his 80th birthday.

Last chance! Don’t miss these incredible film costumes during the Festival. Take a wander through the streets of Cork City on our ever-popular Cork Film Trail, which features stunning film and TV costumes across four locations: The River Lee Hotel, The Metropole Hotel, Gate Cinema and Singer’s Corner.Â
The stunning costumes from the Irish Costume Archive Project include costume designer Sandy Powellâs lavish creation for Olivia Colmanâs character Queen Anne in The Favourite (pictured above left) at The River Lee Hotel, and the sparkling suit designed by costume designer Maggie Donnelly and worn by Richard Dormer as Terri Hooley in the biopic Good Vibrations at The Gate Cinema. Discover Cillian Murphy’s costume from The Wind That Shakes The Barley in Singer’s Corner with Paul Mescal’s and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ instantly recognisable outfits from the hit series in The Metropole Hotel.
