Calling All Filmmakers: This is our final call for submissions to the 63rd Cork Film Festival which takes place from 9th – 18th November.
The Festival’s Grand Prix Irish and International Short Film Awards are Academy Award® qualifying, ensuring that the winners in Cork join the Oscars® long list. Submit your feature, documentary or short now via FilmFreeway to be in with a chance of screening at Ireland’s longest running and largest film festival.

AVA 2018 Upgrade – 30 New Titles Added
We are delighted to announce that our expanded catalogue of Festival films will go live at Cork City Library from next Monday June 25th at 11am. 31 additional titles from the 2017 Festival (along with 24 existing titles from the 2016 Festival) will be available to view, for free, at the AVA viewing booth. Drop in during library opening hours and settle in to the dedicated viewing space where you can watch a selection of Irish and international titles including the CFF17 Best Cork Short winner Linda Curtain’s ‘Everything Alive Is in Movement’; locally made schlock masterpiece and Best Short winner at the 2017 Russian International Horror Film Festival, Jack Scott’s ‘Wood’; Best Documentary Short at the 2017 Fastnet Film Festival, ‘Raymond’; and much loved Children’s animation ‘The Last Leaf’.
Additionally from the Autumn, library card holders will be able to view the entire catalogue online on their own internet enabled devices. Please check our website for full programme details and for updates on how to access the expanded AVA programme from wherever you are.
The Festival Circuit – Sheffield Doc/Fest
Celebrating the art of documentary and non-fiction storytelling, the 25th Sheffield Doc|Fest proved itself to be a shining exemplar of a city-focussed film festival, enthusiastically supported by the city, celebrated by its national and international industry partners and welcomed by a keen and curious local audience. Bolstered by imaginative events, panels and talks, a popular virtual reality element and frequent social and networking opportunities, the film programme itself remains incredibly strong, showcasing non-fiction work which is unapologetically political, provocative, enlightening and, just occasionally, hugely entertaining. The Grand Jury Prize was deservedly awarded to ‘The Silence of Others’, directed by Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar, a film about the epic struggle of victims of Spain’s 40-year dictatorship under General Franco, who continue to seek justice to this day. As Cork Film Festival continues to define itself as the country’s destination for feature documentary, we will be working to showcase the best of current non-fiction work from Ireland and around the world, in November.
Next on our radar is the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Now in it’s 72nd year, the 2018 edition will run from 20th June – 1st July and will showcase some of the latest in British, American, European and World cinema as well as providing a platform for up and coming film-makers from around the world.

Robert Curgenven is an Australian composer/sound artist drawing on the physicality of sound – not just in terms of the physical impact on the body, but the way in which the auditory can shape our perception of space and the flow of time, from architectural to open space. His previous performances at Cork Film Festival include ‘World Destruction – A Young Lover’s Guide’ in 2015, and 2014’s ‘Resonant Frequencies’. (In fact he relocated to Cork on the basis of his positive experience playing at CFF in 2014). This year sees Robert premiere of a new piece for pipe organ at St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral titled ‘Tailte Cré-Umha’ as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival.
The concert’s score draws on Ireland’s relations with Cornwall and Mediterranean Europe. 5,000 years ago, coming into the Bronze Age, Ireland’s copper and Cornwall’s tin traversed the continent to make bronze. Tailte Cré-Umha uses this navigation of the landscape itself as the score as those people and materials travel land, sea, sky and Europe at a time of change.

Screening at The Gate Cinema June 26th
Dublin Oldschool tells the story of Jason, a wannabe DJ, on a drug-fuelled trip through the streets of Dublin as he stumbles from one session to another. Somewhere between the DJs, decks, and drug busts he stumbles across a familiar face from the past, his brother Daniel. Daniel, an educated heroin addict, is living on the streets. The brothers haven’t seen or spoken to each other in years but over a lost weekend they reconnect and reminisce over raves, tunes and their troubled past. Two brothers living very different lives might have more in common than they think.
