CIFF Film Club: A New Home Cinema Festival Experience This Summer
Cork International Film Festival, in association with The Gate Cinemas, is delighted to bring you a new home cinema Festival experience: The CIFF Film Club.
As Ireland’s first and largest film festival, CIFF presents premieres of the latest Irish and international films in Cork and champions the magic of the shared cinematic experience. After 65 years, we’re still innovating and reimagining new ways to bring you the best cultural films and a Festival experience. With the impact of Covid 19 and the temporary closure of Cork’s beloved cinemas, the Festival has partnered with The Gate Cinemas to offer film lovers a new way to enjoy a curated programme of Festival films from the comfort of your couch on CIFF’s new online platform this summer, concluding with a special homecoming screening back in The Gate Cinema Cork on August 11th. Starting on Tuesday, June 16th and running throughout the summer, CIFF Film Club offers a specially selected series of fortnightly screenings of new Irish and international features, documentaries, shorts and classics, with exclusive interviews and Q&As with filmmakers – a taste of the Film Festival experience.

CIFF Film Club Launches With New
Argentinian Documentary ‘Solo’
Martín Perino is a young Argentinian piano virtuoso and composer. He is also a patient of El Borda, the largest and most controversial psychiatric hospital in Latin America. A child prodigy and the most promising talent of his generation, Martin is now trying to find a way to overcome his illness, drawing strength from his own fragility, to perform his latest composition. ‘Solo’ is the first feature documentary by French director Artemio Benki. Garnering festival awards since its premiere last year, it was most recently awarded the New Talent Award at DocsBarcelona. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with CIFF Director of Programming Anna Kopecká and ‘Solo’ Producer Petra Oplatkova.

Bulgarian Feature ‘Sister’ + AEMI Short Film
‘Object Interviews Part III’
A small town in present-day Bulgaria. The lie of a teenage girl destroys the world of her elder sister. Struggling to fix what she has done, she finds out the truth about their mother. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with Director Svetla Tsotsorkova and Producer Svetoslav Ovcharov.
The screening will be preceded by a short film from the ‘Object Interviews Part III’ series by Irish artist Patrick Hough. This artists’ moving image work was selected to create a dialogue with ‘Sister’ by AEMI Curators (Artists’ and Experimental Moving Image) who will present the world premiere of their new programme as part of CIFF2020 this November.

Czech Classics: Pavel Jurácek ‘Joseph Kilian’ and ‘The Key for Determining Dwarfs’
Our new Director of Programming, Anna Kopecká, who joined us earlier this year from Prague International Film Festival, brings you a special evening with Czech New Wave director Pavel Juráček in this Czech Classics event.
In ‘Joseph Kilian’, our hero Jan spontaneously takes advantage of a shop that hires out cats to lonely people. However, when he tries to return the cat the next day, the shop has vanished completely. The elusive Josef Kilián, the man who can apparently resolve Jan’s issues, appears to be permanently beyond reach. This was Pavel Juráček’s first film and was made in the best tradition of Franz Kafka and Czech surrealists. ‘The Key for Determining Dwarfs or Last Journey of Lemuel Gulliver’ by renowned Slovak director Martin Šulík is a staged documentary based on the journals that Juráček was writing throughout his life. The documentary follows this important figure of Czech New Wave from his first successes in the 1960s through the occupation and toughening of the regime, the emigration of his first wife and his depression that followed when Juráček was forced to stop his work. Juráček is played by his son Marek. This double bill will be followed by a Q&A with special guests to be announced.

Summer Series Concludes with Homecoming Preview Screening of New Irish Feature ‘Broken Law’
For our final CIFF Film Club summer series screening, we’re bringing you a very special homecoming screening in the Gate Cinema Cork City of new Irish feature ‘Broken Law’. Starring CFF2019 Grand Prix Irish Short Award Winner Tristan Heanue, Graham Earley, John Connors, Ryan Lincoln and Gemma-Leah Devereux, ‘Broken Law’ tells the story of two estranged brothers on opposite sides of the law. Dave Connolly is a respected member of the Garda Síochána but his loyalty to the force gets tested by his ex-convict brother Joe following a botched robbery. ‘Broken Law’ is a taut and tense thriller that examines family loyalty, legacy and how far we will go to protect the ones we love.
