Francis O’Mahony: CIFF First Cut! Award Winner 2022

    Apr 04, 2022 |
    News

We are delighted to announce Francis O’Mahony as the winner of the First Cut! Youth Film Festival 2022 Cork International Film Festival Award for his film Nettle Bush.

This award enables the winner to submit their film and attend the 67th Edition of CIFF in November 2022 and also includes free admission to Cork International Film Festival’s ‘First Take’ Industry Day. You can check out more of Francis’ work via his National College of Art and Design (NCAD) profile. Many congratulations to Francis and here are a few words from the filmmaker:

“Over lockdown many people began to question their gender or come out as transgender. Re-assessing your gender performance and your personal relationship to your body is one thing, but how do you go about practising feng shui with the Victoria Beckham perfume on your shelf or the delicately hidden Spiderman sheets? I’ve interviewed a small group of those questioning and out about the gender euphoria of repainting your bedroom walls. Winning the FirstCut! Youth Film Festival 2022 Cork International Film Festival award is a great honour. Not only did I benefit from the development of my credits for potential grants and applications but I was also automatically eligible for consideration for the 67th CIFF. My opportunity didn’t end with winning and immediately gave me another goal to focus towards.”

About First Cut! Youth Film Festival:

The First Cut! Youth Film Festival is an annual event dedicated to showcasing new films by young filmmakers (aged 12 – 24), which took place from 9th – 12th March 2022 in cinema and online. Cork International Film Festival was thrilled to be Digital Partner once again with FCYFF and presented a specially curated programme of short films for young people from last November’s Festival. The 13th edition of FCYFF was an in-person festival once again, after a completely online edition in 2021. Audiences from all over Ireland and abroad were invited to join in at the beautiful seaside town of Youghal for a completely free four-day programme of events including open call short film, and feature film screenings, workshops, and conversations with some of the leading filmmakers in Ireland and more.
