Award-winning Director Frank Berry Joins Cork Film Festival Board
Cork Film Festival is delighted to announce the appointment of Frank Berry to its Board of Directors. Frank Berry is an award-winning Irish Director whose career began with community filmmaking and television. His first feature documentary, the critically acclaimed Ballymun Lullaby (2011), won the DGA Directors Finders Award. His next film I Used to Live Here (2014), a drama that deals with suicide clusters among teenagers, won the Best First Feature Audience Award at the Galway Film Fleadh and has been released in Irish cinemas to critical acclaim. His latest feature, CFF2017 Audience Award winning Michael Inside is now available on Netflix. Berry was an invited guest curator of CFF’s unique ‘Illuminate’ film and mental health programme in 2018 and his film I Used to Live Here will be the focus of CFF’s new youth film and mental health pilot outreach programme for Transition Year students ‘Intinn’ taking place as part of World Suicide Prevention Day this September. International Film Festival Circuit: Cannes
The 72nd Cannes Film Festival wrapped up at the end of May with the Palme d’Or being awarded to South Korean film Parasite. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, the first Korean director to win the award, the film is a brilliant balance of social satire, black comedy and horror. Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu served as jury president; other awards included best screenplay for Céline Sciamma’s achingly beautiful period love story Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, and Mati Diop’s captivating debut, the Senegal-set Atlantics, scooped the Grand Prix. The Un Certain Regard Jury, led by Nadine Labaki (Capernaum, CFF2018’s Closing Gala) awarded the top prize to Karim Aïnouz’s The Invisible Life Of Eurídice Gusmão, earning the first major award for a Brazilian film in official selection in 50 years.
The Cork Film Festival team were in attendance along with 12,500 registered participants for Europe’s largest film market. There were some signs of development in the ongoing campaign to improve female representation across the film industry, and back home, CFF is one of eight Irish film festivals to sign up to the 50/50 by 20/20 Charter to achieve gender parity in the industry.

CFF’s New Education & Outreach Programmes Proving Popular
We were delighted to welcome over 100 primary school pupils from Morning Star National School and Ballinora National School to our special Green-Schools Week screening of Pascal Plisson’s documentary On the Way to School in partnership with the Irish Film Institute Education Department, and Green Schools as part of Walk to School Week 2019 (May 13th-17th) and The Gate Cinema Cork.
Cork Film Festival’s new Film & Mental Health Programme ‘Intinn’ For Transition Year Students Fully Subscribed
Cork Film Festival is one of thirty organisations nationwide to be awarded funding by Creative Ireland National Creativity Fund to expand our successful annual ‘Illuminate’ Film & Mental Health Programme to youth audiences through a new participative programme for Transition Year students, called ‘Intinn’, meaning ‘mind’ or ‘way of thinking’. Following a call for expressions of interest from Cork schools, the ‘Intinn’ pilot events this September 10th and 11th, coinciding with World Suicide Prevention Day, are now fully subscribed and a further 700+ students are on a waiting list for when the Intinn programme is offered regionally throughout Munster in 2020.

Culture Night: Save the Date!
Cork Film Festival is delighted to present a pop up programme of Irish language short films in Cork City Library, with local filmmakers in attendance, as part of Culture Night 2019, the annual nationwide celebration of arts and culture, taking place on Friday 20th September. The short films have been specially selected from Cork Film Festival’s AVA (Audio Visual Access) Free Short Film Library which offers a catalogue of short film from Cork Film Festival’s past programmes, year-round, in Cork City Library and, newly in 2019, Bishopstown and Midleton Libraries, and online through a new video on demand service. This is a great opportunity to experience short film as gaeilge, meet the filmmakers and find out about Cork Film Festival’s unique AVA short film platform, so save the date in your diaries now and check our website for more information: corkfilmfest.org
