We are delighted to partner with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland which promotes the LUX Audience Award. CIFF screens the largest programme of high-quality European film anywhere in Ireland (200+ features and shorts per year). In 2021, CIFF selected and screened Flee directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen; Parallel Mothers directed by Pedro Almodóvar; and Women Do Cry directed by Mina Mileva, Vesela Kazakova which won the CIFF Spirit of the Festival Award Winner 2021, which were all included in the LUX Award shortlist.
LUX Audience Award
LUX – The European Audience Film Award (LUX Audience Award) was introduced in 2020 and is presented every year by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in partnership with the European Commission and Europa Cinemas.
The award is built on the former LUX Prize, the film prize of the European Parliament established in 2007 as a symbol of the European Parliament’s commitment to culture, and the European Film Academy’s People’s Choice Award. It continues to build cultural bridges across Europe, in line with the original LUX Prize objectives, by shedding light on films that go to the heart of the European public debate.
The award aims to strengthen ties between politics and citizens, by inviting European audiences to become active protagonists and cast their vote for their favourite films.The LUX Audience Award forms the basis of this partnership proposal. Films submitted for the European Film Awards are nominated for the LUX Audience Award by the LUX Selection Panel.
LUX Audience Award 2023
The long list of films in contention is drawn from all the Fiction and Documentary nominations put forward to the EFA Awards. Five of those films will be selected from the long list for the LUX Audience Award shortlist.
The list of five nominated films will be unveiled on 10th December 2022, during the European Film Awards in Reykjavík, Iceland. The ceremony will officially launch the LUX Audience Award 2023, enabling audiences across Europe in early 2023 to rate their favourite films among the five nominees.
The CIFF2022 programme includes the following eight titles from the European Film Award Nominees:
- Aftersun directed by Charlotte Wells
- Alcarràs directed by Carla Simón
- Beautiful Beings directed by Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson
- Corsage directed by Marie Kreutzer
- Godland directed by Hlynur Pálmason
- How to Save a Dead Friend directed by Marusya Syroechkovskaya
- Pamfir directed by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk
- Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush directed by Andreas Dresen
Once the LUX shortlisted films are announced in December, Cork International Film Festival will present them for screening in Spring 2023, ahead of the winner announcement in June, allowing for audiences to discover fantastic films from Europe and cast their vote for their favourite ones.
