The 2017 Festival is bookended by two distinctive films not to be missed…

Opening Night Gala: The Man Who Invented Christmas

Christmas comes early to Cork with Our Opening Night Gala: The Man Who Invented Christmas. Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) is struggling after a run of flops have left him both financially strapped and bereft of ideas. Yet the lively streets of London are a place where inspiration can strike in any moment, and Dickens has an idea to write a book set at Christmas about an unloved miser. Presented in Cork’s original Victorian theatre The Everyman, this festive romp is the perfect film to kick off the ten day festival.

Closing Night Gala: Downsizing

Alexander Payne’s Downsizing is a supremely kooky sci-fi road movie. As the world’s resources become ever more stretched, Norwegian scientists pioneer a technique of cellular miniaturisation which gives humans the option of shrinking to mere inches high. Overstretched Paul Safranek (Matt Damon), encouraged by his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig), gradually buys into the idea, though once tiny, nothing much works out for him. Featuring an exceptional performance from Matt Damon, Downsizing is a work of dazzling wit and intelligence.

Documentary Gala: Promised Land

In the run up to the 2016 presidential election, as Donald Trump headed for the White House, Eugene Jarecki (The House I Live In (2014), Why We Fight (2005)) drove Elvis Presley’s Rolls Royce across America in an attempt to discover heart and soul of the country. Elvis’ life story is held up as the embodiment of the American Dream and his myth, legend, impact and influence are dissected here through interviews with curious passing folk as well as the famous and the informed. A long and diverse list of contributors includes David Simon, Emmylou Harris, Alec Baldwin and Chuck D, with some glorious musical moments in the back of the car.

Volunteers

Cork Film Festival are looking for volunteers for a variety of roles to put the heart and soul of film onto the streets and screens of Cork.

Volunteer Roles include: Box Office Assistants, Front of House, Guest Office, Press Office, Marketing Distribution, Runner, Technical Assistant, Steward; Survey Team.
